Danube

Contributed by debris on Saturday, 18th September 2010 @ 08:25:35 AM in AEST
Topic: LostLove

The last time we met by the river
I wore a statue’s disguise
I saw you through the mist of the Danube
You stood out by the fear in your eyes.
I whispered “I’m sorry. I love you”.
You batted your eyes to the sky
And turned to face the cathedral
Where the martyrs and poets all lie.
You said “No. No I can’t. I cannot love you again”.

I watched as you fiercely departed,
Your heels never hitting the stone.
Lost in a crowd of cold faces
To find an address, still unknown.
And I swore to the sky and to heaven,
And I swore to the earth and to hell
I swore “No. No I can’t. I cannot love again”.

I disappeared through the mist,
To somewhere that I never knew;
Where the men are your friends if your buying
And the ladies taste like morning dew.
Where I propped myself up for the winter
And decided that there I should be
And I spent the length of the Danube
Until I reached my own Black Sea.
There I looked for mermaids and beauty
But the waters were stormy and rough.
And I thought to myself,
“This is love and it’s never enough”.

So I ventured back to the city,
Where the seasons had made the world green
And I stood outside your cathedral
Hidden, so I would not be seen.
In my grief I thought I might worship,
though I never believed in such things.
I crossed the threshold of holy
To witness the exchange of two rings.
And there as a smiling man lifted
The veil of a beauty so rare,
My eyes not quite believing;
My heart pounding in fear.
I saw you joyous and happy
Your smile radiating the pews
So I turned, and I left
Disappointed by such happy news.

Down through the laneways I wandered
Back to my private abyss.
My heart filled with loss and with longing
My lips with an ache to be kissed
I pondered the love that I’d squandered
And I found a new season of fear
Where I nailed my flag to the mast
And resigned myself to dwelling there
And I thought, then I said
“No. No I can’t. I cannot love again”.
