When I am gone, the world will not falter
it will not cease to turn.
My steps are not counted, recorded,
and everything that I yearn
for is human, pitifully material
even love, happiness is material
for we put these things in poems, in songs, in verse
to give our life meaning.
Call me a cynic, if you may
for at least I don't live in a false hope
that my actions, my words will mean anything,
that I'll let this pretense rope
me into exalting life; when life means nothing,
when we are but food for worms.
So when you hear the words "Carpe Diem"
do not forget that your days are numbered.
So since in this day and age there are morals,
faith, integrity, appreciation engrained in each thing
whether it be writing, words, music, silence
all I am saying is that this poem has no meaning.

Ah yes, a fellow nihilist. I agree with this poem in most regards, but i think that there is one thing is the universe that has meaning: truth. Truth is a pure absolute that cannot be altered or corrupted, it can only be avoided. You clearly seek the truth and are unafraid of it, as exemplified by these lines:
'for at least I don't live in a false hope
that my actions, my words will mean anything'
So is it not blunt, honest, pure truth that gives your life meaning; that gives you something to live for?

Death is an illness that will be cured. Ageing is a process that can and will be revearsed. Sickness of any kind will soon be cured. Stem cell and genetic engineering have already shown that many children born today will never die and if advances continue at their current rate - many of us alive today may never have to die. In addition to this one must accept that the cosmos is full of races already in full command of all biological processes and its more than likely humans will soon meet such races. Beyond all this is the true nature of reality that if understood would enable each of us to manifest our subjective wish list into an objective reality. I hope my three pronged approach to eternal life and optimism helps. I'm not barking mad - believe me. |
