Even though this room is united
In concern for you
The loneliness is savage,
A wild beast pacing
The corridors of my mind.
I watch you laying there devout in a belief
That all will be well
And I find I cannot live up to the expectation
You might have of me..
You are quiet and your face, protruding from a mask,
Is grey with times unwavering gift to surprise.
A grubby white hospital sheet cannot hide your suffering,
Cannot disguise your bones as they lay
In an ever shrinking gown of flesh.
I make light of your undiluted concerns
And as I turn from your bed to leave
You flash me a glance and I am aghast at the thoughts I have,
And in that one glance, that one moment,
I know I am seeing my own reflection in your suffering,
Perhaps my mirror image in years to come.

Hi Dennis,
There, but for the grace of God, go I.
It's not uncommon to see ourselves in the
sufferings of others. The older we get the more
often it happens.
Well scripted heartfelt piece of verse.
