Declining Certainty.

Now that the sun is setting
Across the valley of your mind,
You trail a loneliness that everyone fears.
The sharpness of thought
Is blunted by the gathering twilight
And the shadows that once knew their place
Are bold to come upon the green pasture of memory,
Slowly, surely, alienating you from everything and everyone.
Today increasingly confuses you with its simplicity
And soon you will slip into the comforting arms
Of a long ago day
When time held no fear and fear had no meaning.
And as you ebb and flow on the advancing tide of uncertainty,
You will make laughter sound heavy,
The heaviness of the cruel burden you have to carry.
And as the sun seeks a deeper setting
Your eyes will be dulled by sadness, retreating to a haunted
Desperate landscape where only you will dwell.
And I ask, what can we do? For we too must carry a burden,
A cruel certainty,
The certainty of decline and the declining certainty
Of who you are.

You have written on a subject that I am all too familiar with and anything I say, I feel, will not make you feel better. My brain overflows with thoughts on the subject.
As for poetry, you did a very good job. You definitely invoked emotion in this reader's heart!!!! |

My heart drips of saddness and tears for you and Caren, Dennis, for my mother had the dreaded disease, and your poem was so like her slow decline! But, take heart for before my mother slipped deeper into her abyss she told me it was nice in a way, for it was all the bad that she did not miss.
A cruel certainty knowing there's not much anyone can do, I looked for all the good and found a few.
She was in no pain, physically, she could still walk with a cain, Look for the blessings that remain.
Please know how very sorry I am for Caren, you and she too!
Warm love
