Rupture

war

Midnight;
and a whisper
of unrest snakes
through the ranks.
The moon sends pearls of light
bouncing off batons.
Battle cries, the beat of feet
crushing the concrete
builds to a frayed silken crescendo.
Peace sequestered;
shreds of Grandma's organza dress
crammed into bottles
with the scent of gasoline.
Flames cleave the star-spangled sky
like accidental brushstrokes
against the urban canvas.
The lips of an inferno
kiss human flesh.
Sunrise;
the horizon bleeds rose.
Speechless breaths and breathless
speech meld together
in dulcet unison.
Mute with adrenaline,
they drop their stones,
hand by hand, on to the
forever ruptured pavement.
