Ghost Of The Six Shadows

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Monday, 26th July 2010 @ 08:37:04 AM in AEST
Topic: mystical

Inside the old chateau the air was still and breathless
Dust sheets thrown lazily over worn furniture hid the past
Light danced through shutters, late afternoon marched into dusk
Faded pictures stared as sentinels to all corners of the room

Specks of ash in the old stone hearth marked proof of former life
Among the silence and the nothing, lasting presence reigned
In chambers on the upper floor strange noises cut the dark
Creaks and groans a wakening that death could not defy

Footsteps in the lower hallway screamed his mind awake
Ice to the senses, cold fingers stroked the spine
Candle danced, contorted flames hypnotic in the gloom
As the first of the shadows crossed from the other side

They did not know his purpose, those who warned against it
Like a boxed up secret with a precious, single key
Another shadow skimmed along the edges of the ceiling
As he sank into the high-backed, strange familiar wooden chair

As hours melted, futher shadows formed from muddied light
Until all six had visited as the tellers had foretold
Candle flames now flickered bright as six merged into one
And formed into a hollow face of silence by the door

He looked upon the apparition, knew the features shown
Remorse bit deep as tears took hold and dropped him to his knees
I am here now father, be at peace, let your spirit take its rest
The figure smiled, held out his arms, then faded into night

That one gave me goose bumps and shivers galore. How can you write such spooky, cold, scary poems while seated by the pool in such hot weather? I loved every line in this one Steve. You are a wonderful story teller. I could see it all very well in my "Mind's Eye!"
I had a hard time staying with you by the pool!*smiles*
BRAVO! Roses at your feet!
Warm love
consue

You'd be a good storyteller on a ghost walk!!
You give the reader plenty to see and describe it well. Good work.
Chris.

This was such a captivating read! You really took your time to establish imagery for the reader and you succeeded ten fold. Have you ever tried your hand at short stories? I can easily see this as one. Great job!

Was listening to music by "Secret Garden" while reading this - all I can say is , could imagine every word, every sentence in this. Yes you should write stories. Definately.
