If Only…
In a world full of love, you alone wept—
Wept for the ignorant, the poor of heart, the needy,
When we all blindly looked the other way.
In a world full of hate, you alone loved—
Loved all of God’s creatures, from the saintly to the sinful,
When we all showed them contempt and ill will.
In a world full of sin, you alone prayed—
Prayed for our souls, so that we may be saved,
When we all failed to forgive those who sinned against us.
In a world full of selfishness, you alone cared—
Cared selflessly for others without asking anything in redemption,
When we all were too self-absorbed to notice and return the favor.
You were too good for this world,
And if only we could have been more like you—
Seen this world through your loving gaze,
Smelled the rain,
Tasted life,
Heard each other’s cries,
Touched another’s soul—
Only then could we have made your goodness live on forever through our own actions.
