Gray Woman

Contributed by Grace_and_Glory on Tuesday, 6th July 2010 @ 10:45:07 AM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

I passed by this old woman,
though she lingers in my mind.
Walking slowly, hair gray and tangled,
eyes a haze with age, lifelessly dull, sad.
Her mind seemed all but gone.
Is she more than a shadow
wondering what is left of her spent life?
Is it spent, is it with death that we expire,
or maybe with death of something else?
I already feel dead inside.
Does anyone care about the memories she carries?
I wonder what road she has traveled
to bring her to this haggard place.
What value is hidden there, is there joy,
does she hope, does she still dream?
If her mind is gone, is she?
My body is not so worn, but my mind is.
I may as well be walking in her skin.
Did she ever dance; I picture a twirling little girl
with hopes and dreams, vibrantly full of life, energy.
Now a shell of that life, walking,
like a ghost caught between dreams.
Pain slowly drained the life from a wide-eyed child,
to this old woman shuffling along,
seeing only through a mask of insanity.
Is there a way to reach her; is it too late to clear her vision?
Is there hope for her, is there hope for me?
Will I forever be bound by my insanity?

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
