HAPPY FATHER'S DAY FREDDIE
I love telling "Foxy" stories, this one is simply grand!
Freddie was born without eyeballs, hard to understand.
Insecticides may take the blame, he poked his head
out of his den,
A farmer spraying his crop, no one knows when?
***
A rehabilitator agreed to take Freddie in because he was blind
He was wild, and couldn't be released back to the wild
that would be too unkind!
They planned to use him in educating people about wildlife.
Little did they know he would educate them from much stress!
***
Freddie would transform into something remarkable;
a "Foster Father" for orphaned baby foxes
People brought them into the rescue center relieving
them from various traumas.
The first little kits they gave him, he immediately
checked them over for ticks.
His instincts clicked in and he began digging a den
caring for them like an old hen with her chicks!
When the little kits refused to eat, he immediately dug up chicken
he had buried
Freddie also turned them into nocturnal kits, he'd order them into
the den during the day to succeed.
Marvelously, he also taught them to be leery of humans, what a good
Foster Father was he!
Putting them back into the wild was the hardest thing for Freddie,
that would never please his fancy~!
Freddie is moved away from the baby foxes when they are old enough
to be released into the wild.
The babies rebelled, and wouldn't come out of their den for three days,
their devotion for Freddie wasn't mild!
Poor Freddie paced, and cried, then wouldn't eat anymore
They had to calm everyone down, so they opened Freddie's door.
***
Their caretakers released the young kits into the wild, but left the
enclosure to Freddie's cage door closed, but facing the outside
This way his adopted crew could come see him, but couldn't get inside.
They remained in the area, and stopped in to see Freddie through-out
the winter.
Evidenced by the prints, the toys, chews, and bones that they saw
outside the compound, in all kinds of weather.
***
I'd like to think they will still come home to show their grandkids
to Grandpa!
In the meantime Freddie continues to adopt orphaned kits
and raises them like a father without a flaw.
Freddie's partings with the babies have grown less painful.
He seems to accept that in his role as a "Foster Father," he
can let them go, because he'll soon have another denful!
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY FREDDIE!
We love you!

I received this endearing story from the HSUS in Indiana.
The lady that tells the story about Freddie had the pleasure of
meeting him about a year ago. She was so touched by the way
he cared for the orphaned foxes, she said,
"I'll never forget it!"
and neither
will
I!

The poem is mine.
