With so long since I've written
And so many things to say,
How can it be expected
To continue on this way?
It seems to me you made your choice
All those years ago;
It seems to me you thought it was best
To simply let me go.
These nightmares rack me now,
And tears make it hard to sleep.
It's been so long since I've prayed
For the Lord, my soul to keep.
I hope you can forgive me
For not forgiving you.
For all these years I've been afraid
That all my fears are true:
That truly I'm unlovable,
And that I break the things I love.
I wish you could see
This pattern that has haunted me,
Proving so effectively
That I am not enough.
Yet still now I feel no release;
It seems you will always be binding me
To all my fears and all I lack.
I know I'll never get it back.
So now I lay me down to sleep
With no protection, my heart to keep.
I pray I live 'til I wake
To hear my father, my prayer to take.
