My Allotment Day

I am lost amongst the crumbling soil of the allotment plot.
A mower hums softly on the still air,
An iconic sound of a lazy summer afternoon.
My well honed hoe is slicing a rhythm through the weeds,
And they bow to the strength of this superior thing.
In the herb bed the bees are on a pilgrimage,
Gathering at the temple of the blue sweet Borage plant
That stands side by side with Parsley, Sage, Lavender and Curry plant,
The latter, when brushed by the breeze, gives off a pungent scent,
Creating a more exotic feel to this simple Welsh afternoon.
I row up the potatoes, my spade glinting in the sunlight,
Throws up mounds of sweet dark earth around the rampaging green stalks
That even now are showing off the first delicate white flowers
That tell of the new life growing deep underground.
A month ago this plot was bare, just lumpy black soil crying out to be tamed.
Now the potatoes throw sly glances the way of peas, beans and feathery topped carrots.
From the plot next to me the old man emerges,
Stooped and sheened by the hot sun, his blue dungarees hanging from his sparse frame,
He pauses to roll a cigarette and although his hands are swollen
From life's great affliction, he makes the fag with deft fingers, bringing it slowly to his mouth,
The flare of the match a sudden, uncalled for intrusion. He puffs the foul weed,
Pushes his cap away from his lined forehead, nods at me,
Then retreats to the shade of an apple tree.
I sit for a moment in the sun and give thanks to the afternoon,
The sun, the growth all around me. The sound of the bees is a natural choir
And I listen to their soft song on this my allotment day.

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! This was splendid, indeed! How enjoyed reading this lovely poem, of earth, and sun, and warmth upon my soul. I loved seeing the old man next door, your descriptions were explicit, and I could almost smell the smoke from his cig.
Your allotment is plentiful, and your so blessed!
Roses at your feet Cashfan1 My Mind's Eye just loves your poetry, and my heart takes it all in too!
Warm love
