I burn a candle and watch the ribbon of smoke
Twist and coil higher and higher until
It's nothing. The smell still lingers though;
Much like how you still linger.
Grim's bony hand is hauling your soul into
Eternity and yet you claw at life,
Refusing to leave.
What keeps you here?
I always thought you'd be glad to go.
When I was a child I often caught you
Looking at the gold-leaf icons
With that soft gaze reserved only for them.
I recall those autumn days spent propping
Pictures of saints against a glowing tealight
And waiting until the wick shrivelled up and
The flames died in our eyes.
Then came the long trek to the chapel
That smelled like oak and incense.
Twenty pence through the slot in the wall
Is the price of light here
But God forbid Granny and Granda
Don't have electricity for their house in heaven.
To the pews as the organ hums to life.
I know I should be praying
But instead I'm trying to catch a glimpse of the
Tiny angels that live in those brass pipes.
I never did find them.
And when the blood clotted in your brain
No cherub sat on your shoulder nor
Did a saint caress your face as it
sagged and numbed.
That's why you don't want to go.
Because when you crashed to the sterile tiles
All you saw
Was the bathroom bulb
Drowning
In black.

Beautifully written. I could visualize everything in this piece. I am sorry your great-uncle had to go through this. Many if not all of us have faith issues at difficult points in life. Powerful poem!

Heidi is right. Everything in this poem is so visual and I feel as though I am in the scenes you are describing. 5 stars!! : ) |
