Grief

I await my cue, a drama all too real.
Staged according to height, we all align.
The orchestrated lift is not what I’d expected,
braced for an event that never quite happens.
My shoulder aches where you rest
and guilt consumes my thoughts at recognition of this.
Trying to walk uniformly on cathedral tile.
Unwilling soldiers, marching out of time.
My ear against the wood makes seaside sounds.
In my mind, it’s you, whispering good bye.
