When death comes

Contributed by frikkie5000 on Saturday, 15th May 2010 @ 02:05:09 PM in AEST
Topic: anguished

Staring down the black abyss that fills my thought
Jumping off into the void
Hoping to find some sense of relief,
From the naked existence I have been bequeathed

Life bleak and cold;
An eternal plain with no landmarks of solace or comfort
And yet another day dawns, one blending into the other
Giving me vague hints that; someday it will cease to be
I vanquish these thoughts
They belong to another

Blinded by my boundless self-indulgence,
I did not see the arrogance reflected in my eyes
Instead I used my eyes to gaze outward

My hope turned inward,
I did not regard the ignorance in which I thrived
My insight scratched only the surface;
Constantly searching
Fervently digging,
Whilst my mind was directed toward the heavens

So concerned with life’s trivialities;
I did not give notice to the child holding my hand,
Reminding me of our trip to the zoo
I shrugged him aside
For I had more important things to do

Truth be told;
Life was wasted on me
For only in the twilight did I give notice to my child
So innocent in his intent
So absolute in his judgment
Too late I appreciate what I held in my hands,
Now quickly vanishing through my fingers like sand

I should have spent more occasions,
Savoring the taste, instead of trying to pick more fruit
Recklessly enjoyed life, instead of seeking the root
I should have;
Laughed more
Even cried more
For now it’s too late
A lifetime of strife;
Brought me to the gates of clarity
Only to return,
With a hand full of misery

One last time
I shout at the hole
The only echo to follow;
My own.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
