CARROTS, EGGS, AND COFFEE

CARROTS, EGGS, AND COFFEE

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee?
You'll never again look at coffee meekly.
And,
Here's the reason why........
A young woman told her mother about
her very hard life.
She didn't know how she was going
to make it with all it's strife!
She was so tired of fighting, and struggling
It seemed as one problem was solved,
a new one arose bumbling.

Her Mother took her into the kitchen and filled
three pots with water..........
In the first boiling pot she placed carrots, in the
second, eggs, and the last, she placed coffee beans,
then sat down without any chatter.

After they had boiled for about 20 minutes
she turned off the burners....
Placed the carrots, and eggs in two clusters.
Ladling the coffee out and placing it in a cup,
she turned to her daughter and asked,
"Tell me what you see,"
Replying, she said, "Carrots, eggs,
and coffee all set up."
~~~
The carrots appeared to be soft
and limp.........
Then she asked her to break the egg
removing the shell, it was hard, and crimp.
She asked the daughter to sip the coffee
Smiling she relished it's rich aroma,
and, taste like that of Toffee
"What does it mean Mother?"
~~~
Her Mother explained.............

Each object faced the same adversity
"boiling water"
The carrot was strong and hard,
but it became soft when subjected to the
water, it softened. like blubber
~~~
The egg had been fragile, with
outer shell it was protected.....
But after being placed in the
boiling water it grew hard, and
was affected.
The coffee beans were unique.......
They changed the water's physique
~~~
"Which are you?"
When adversity knocks on your door,
How do you respond?
Are you a carrot, an egg or a
coffee bean, that will soar?
~~~
Are you the carrot that seems strong,
but with pain and adversity wilts?
Becomes soft and lose your strength
like milk spilt?
or,
are you..........
The egg that starts with a malleable heart,
but changes with the heat?
Perhaps after a death, a break-up,
a financial hardship, or some other trial,
were you beat?
You're outer shell looks the same,
but inside you've become bitter.
Your heart has hardened,
A defeated quitter?
~~~
I hope you're the coffee bean that
actually changed the hot water.
The very circumstance that brought
on all the pain, be crueler!
When the water gets hot, it releases
it's fragrance and flavor,
If you're the bean, when things are
at their worse, you make them better.
The beans, when the hour is the darkest,
and trials are the greatest
Are able to elevate themselves to
a higher level, the brightest!
~~~
So,
How do you handle adversity?
Are you the carrot, the egg or
the coffee bean that handles it boldly!
~~~
My thanks to my dear cousins
Don and Char
Your email was so great
I couldn't resist.....
The poem is mine

"When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize
the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe
that when something's suffered damage,
or someone has a history of suffering,
it becomes more beautiful"

what a lovely walk along wisdom's highway, really enjoyed this and agree entirely with the conclusions esp love the way the japanese excerpt reiterates the fact that beauty is honed by suffering,

I'll take the coffee please! lol

What a beautiful and wise way to describe how our trials and tribulations affect us. Though, I would
hazard to guess, it's dependant on how hot the water is, yes? And just how long each "character" is
subjected to it, no? So many variables in life that help to shape who we are. I love your poetry, Consue. It
is so thought provoking and comforting to a heart that is open and willing to breathe in ideas. Well done!

This was just exceptional! :)

take care, lots of hugs

I love this!

"when things are at their worst, you make them better"

not only the crux of the matter (& your wonderful poem) but a beautiful state of mind, if you can achieve it.

peace & blessings to you. . . elle :)
