A Cornish Tale
It was a beautiful moonlight night of incomparable scenery,
The beauty of the Cornish coastline leaving me breathless.
I had eaten a hearty meal at the guest house and ventured out,
And in all honesty amongst the beauty of the landscape,
I had not realised just how far I had walked in this wondrous place.
I decided upon a swift pace back to the lodgings to keep myself sharp,
But it was at the old abbey that my forward motion came to a stop.
In front of me stood a figure in robes and cowl staring out to sea.
I approached silently unwilling to disturb the figure’s reverie,
But upon my approach, turned to me and pointed toward the abbey.
Beneath the cowl there were no discernible features, just darkness,
But I followed his directive, spurred on by some instinct or destiny.
The abbey was small and appropriate to the local architecture.
The walls were of local rough white stone and spoke of ages and destinies.
I approached the open doors and steeling myself ventured within.
The central aisle led to a small altar flanked on both sides by few pews.
This was obviously a small hamlet with an equally small congregation.
The most surprising thing was even given the time of night,
The entire inside of the abbey was illuminated with scented candles.
At the altar, back toward me was a figure in white robes and cowl.
My heart was thumping in my chest as I struggled to understand.
I knew that this was to be something of great importance, but,
My fear made me halt half way down the aisle and I waited.
The figure turned and drew back the cowl revealing her face,
And I found myself staring into the eyes of Melissa’s twin.
It was not her, she was blonde and eyes of green but that face,
So beautiful and the perfect facsimile of my own Melissa.
I was speechless and had no idea what on earth was transpiring
But I gathered the courage to walk forward and ask “Why”?
She looked at me, eyes so expressive and said, “He is coming for her”.
