WAIT A DOZEN YEARS

Contributed by robert_edgar_burns on Thursday, 29th April 2010 @ 07:22:22 AM in AEST
Topic: goodbyepoetry

I told you once I’d wait for you
And so I did my dear.
I’ve been faithful in my patience,
Even into our twelfth year.

You came to me with open hands
I gave you open arms,
Then provided for most of your needs,
You only promised future charms.

I needed to be needed.
You needed me a lot.
But when the bank was broken,
Your absence was all I got.

Had millions been within my reach,
Each penny would have been yours.
Love sick and hopeless I became,
In your eyes I found the cure.

You promised me unquenchable love,
But left me in such thirst,
As if dying in the desert,
But my heart pain was much worse.

When you forget I am alive
For weeks and months on end,
Then show up on my doorstep
Again with open hands;

You show respect for no one.
Love is false within your eyes.
Your promises are deadly,
For within them my love died.

So, a dozen years I waited,
For the love you promised me.
But my sails unfurled in gusty wind,
My ship’s now put to sea.

Oh my. This is probably the best heartbreakingly, BEAUTIFUL
poem I've read in a very long time! This is so full of agonizing
emotion, but with stunning poetic taste. Purely and unabashedly
captivating. Even in its melancholy and sorrow. The last stanza
is a killer. This is so well done. Thank you for sharing.

Exquisite write!! -- Achelois

I hear ya. Folks like that gives folks like me a bad name.
Unfortunately, greed motivates many.
They should never speak about luv 'cause the love of money is the root of all evil.
Good write and I'm so happy you finally figured this one out.
