Gargoyle

Gargoyle

The grotesque gargoyle, sentient, present,
Imaginary or dream state,
Reality, I swear.
The sweat, ice cold, ran down my back,
Paralysis prevented me from uttering a sound,
But to look at that visage, that reflection of Hell,
Held me silent, unmoving and utterly terrified.

Skull, bony and wide, with pointed protrusions
Stared down at me with eyes which radiated;
Flashing from yellow to red with subliminal speed.
Hypnotic they held me transfixed; I felt dampness between my legs.
A long arm was extended and fingers with razor like talons
Pointed at my face, moving slowly down to hover over my chest.
Surely my life was at an end?

I felt the breath before experiencing the aroma.
It was like a furnace and burned my face as it purveyed me,
But the aroma, like putrefaction you could not imagine
And it was only my paralysis that prevented me from vomiting.
It now knelt over my prone body and I took in its musculature.
This creature of the night seemingly had no flesh,
There was just sinew, muscle and bone, a perfectly hideous predator.

My heart was racing, beating like the loudest drum,
My eyes filled with tears and I looked up, I know not why,
Perhaps for some divine intervention which might not come?
But I knew that I had to try, to attempt something.
It was then that it came, that sound, that grating,
As the beast lowered its terrifying head close to mine,
And uttered the most evil of warnings, “Soon”.

I feel like this is a deviation from your usual style? And in the most fantastic way. The vocabulary alone throws it out of the ballpark, but couple it with the eerie, all-too-real description and you literally have me shivering! The last line just seals the mysterious nature with perfection. Exquisite.

This is a wounderful poem about the apouching death. I enjoyed reading it it kind of put a chill down my spine.
