Of Ages

Contributed by spike on Tuesday, 27th April 2010 @ 06:04:33 AM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

on a hilltop I stand alone
a monument to ancient grace;
carved from a distant stone
that travelled far to hold this place

across my visage, weathered runes
meaning lost to time and change;
once they spoke of kings and gods
now indecipherable and strange

petroglyphs were overlaid
by reverent hands who felt my strength,
and offerings were often made
or prayers of want and recompense

those hands and hearts returned to dust
and meaning, in due time was gone,
while lichen lived and died in vain
till once again, I stood alone

mountains rise and fall again
rivers swell and sink to ground
trees die down to maker’s roots
so mysteries will long abound
truths get lost, most for good;
some secrets are never shown:
poems and songs have fragile lives
but history dwells long in stone.

Hi,

History indeed dwells long in stone. A building
(e.g. castle) may lie in ruins, but there are no
ruined stones.

This is a wonderful write on the eternity of
stone - if it could only talk then it might say
something along your lines.

Poetry in every word.

Tommy

Beautiful. Favorite lines:
"poems and songs have fragile lives
but history dwells long in stone."

Very well crafted. Well done.

Hi Spike,

I'd read this earlier in the week & due to whatever coincidentals, I had just watched a great series on History International entitled Ancient Aliens. OK, with that said, I didn't comment then because it felt a little strange (odd, but not scary) that you'd written a piece that I would consider right along the lines of their investigation, as seen through the eyes of a bit of historical mass. I could almost, also interpret it as the musing of some ancient being on the turn of events in time.
Great write, as always. . . a big fan. elle :)
