Journey to Light

Journey to Light

The entrance to the tunnel was intensely foreboding,
There was only a pin-prick of light far into the distance.
As he stepped forward the only thing he heard was a pounding.
His heart beat so quickly, the blood flow so fast, he realised,
The pounding was emanating from within his aching skull.
He moved slowly forward, looking upward was nothing but infinite darkness.
Stretching his arms out wide he touched rough, jagged rock,
A compound that was so sharp it would rip through flesh.
His breathing was laboured as he realised there was little air,
Sweat coursed down his body from the heat within the tunnel,
And his arms and shoulders received cuts as the passage narrowed.
A glow of intense red colour lit up a chamber before him.
Once inside he perceived a pit, flames erupting like the gate to Hell.
From inside he heard the screams and wails of the fallen victims.
There appeared to be no way around and he sunk to his knees.

He held himself and the blood from his arms stained the rock floor.
Refusing to give in he reached for a thin ledge circumnavigating the pit.
As he grasped it the pain nearly made him lose his grip and drop.
The ledge was razor sharp and ripped the flesh from his fingers,
But undaunted, hand over hand, he worked his way around to the other side.
Throwing himself to the floor he realised the surface was soft and sandy,
So eagerly he rubbed it into his wounds only to discover it was salt.
Excruciating pain forced him to scream and the tears almost blinded him,
Blinded him from the opening and the light for which he had been striving.
Hauling himself up he staggered forward into the blinding light and,
Opening his eyes he realised that he was drenched in sweat and his duvet similarly.
His nightmare was symptomatic of his clinical depression but he had learned,
That to give up was to fall into the pit with the fallen, the weak,
But to struggle on, no hard it might be, you will find that escape,
An escape from perpetual self-denigration and unhappiness into light.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
