Margarita L

Good conversation made the dinner fine.
Men spoke of whales, bulls, made bons mots galore.
Young captain told about the salty brine.
Yet so, his stories never seemed to bore.

Don Hernandez raised a crystal glass, viewed its colored content
briefly, drank; conversation needed encouragement. He spoke past
Captain Thompson on his left to Margarita. "Captain Thompson
tells us Sandwich Islands have changed within the last ten years,
Margarita. Whaling port of Lahaina is almost civilized."
Margarita spoke. "Must be terribly interesting, captain, to travel
all over the world and meet so many different kinds of people."
"Miss Hernandez, it's true I've seen and had dealings with many
kinds of people, but I think Sandwich Islanders are the warmest
and most loving of all, present company excluded."
Dona Rose, smiling at husband's captain, spoke from the other
end of the table. "You're gallant, captain. It's not often we
receive so nice a compliment from such man of the world. Isn't
that right, Don Huerra?" Huerra, sitting on Don Hernandez'
immediate right, answered quickly. "Captain Thompson speaks
but truth, Senora. Your family is the most gracious and loving
in all Peralta. You should have seen people's admiration for
Excellency this morning - children running ahead, men and women
shouting his name; nothing would do but he had to give them show."

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
