River Reflection
It was the perfect place for reflection.
Both banks of the small river were lined with rocks
Which had been rendered smooth not rough
By the flow of water over the passage of time.
The sky was filled with pure white clouds
But beams of sunlight struck the water beneath
Enhancing the hues and colours and creating a sparkle.
The small waterfall kept the river running at a steady pace.
I revelled at the beauty and tossed a pebble into the depths.
A dark cloud came over blocking the sun and the mood changed.
My thoughts focussed on her and my face mirrored the sky.
More dark clouds gathered and darkened the sky.
The scene was almost as black as my feelings inside.
For a brief second the sun penetrated the blackness
And in the water before me I pictured her face.
That beauteous visage framed by lustrous long hair,
Which was so fine that to run your fingers through it
Was akin to scooping up a handful of very soft sand
And slowly letting it slip through your fingers.
I tossed another pebble into the now dark waters
And the surface rippled but her image remained constant
I remembered those eyes when we had said goodbye
It is said that someone’s eyes are mirrors of the soul,
But in her case those hypnotic orbs were wells, so deep,
Which when entered entrapped your heart and captured your soul.
I threw another pebble to disturb the image but it remained
Then to make the mood blacker it began to spit with rain.
I still could not remember exactly why it had gone wrong
But it had ended and my heart had been ripped apart.
What of my soul? It was still trapped within those wells,
Nestled within her being, captured forever unable to move,
The spots of rain became heavier and the water mixed with my tears.
I just sat in the saddening scene feeling lost, empty and very alone.

It is sometimes a sad place to find ourselves, in the reflections of yesterday. Hard to break free of the curse that holds us so diligently tied to another's graces. I really liked the metaphor of trying to abolish the memory (reflective in the river) by throwing a pebble, but realizing no matter how many waves you create, the memory remains. Exceptional description of the struggle one can face. Well written, Al.

I love the deep connection with nature in its reflection of emotions inside.
As dark as this poem is, I'd have to say this is one of the best love poems I've ever read; if not love, then deep emotional intimacy - how she has captured your soul and imprinted herself in your mind and yet admiration for her is unwavering even if tempered with bitterness for the loss of her.
One recurring theme I see in your poems is "What of my soul?" and you seem to think you've lost it. You know you gave it away (though this poem says she took it), but you also know it's your soul and you can always get it back. Your soul is in these poems I've read, so you must have some piece left on which to live and grow - not merely sustain yourself, but grow back what parts have been severed by such pain.
Keep writing. |

It's always hard to lose love, even if it
ends poorly. Either way, we tend to
turn it over again and again in out minds
to find the fault, be it theirs or ours. This
read to me like a story, and I could relate
to quite a bit of the journey. I can promise
you this...your soul will heal.
Be well, my friend. Brighter days will come.
