Past Love

Past Love

Memories of love assaulting my heart.
My Venus and I now so far apart.
Why is it this feeling, once so fulfilling
Can rip out my soul, the torment instilling
A fear for the future and how to re-start.

Years before a young man espies
A beauteous goddess of intelligence with eyes
That burned through the conscious, engendering trust
Yet also aroused such feelings of lust.
Married, forbidden, complete yet with ties.

It is always the children, who cannot be lost,
Despite any feelings, just not worth the cost.
The husband abusive, negligent and cruel,
Was still the provider who paid for the school.
How could I convince her with any repost?

Love has its boundaries and I was shown mine.
I prayed and I begged and demanded a sign.
This woman was my soul mate, lover and life,
My only desire was to be husband and wife.
Reality pulled the dreamer back into line.

Five years of absence, abstinence and pain,
Prevents the resurgence of my will to regain
Another to share my innermost heart
For fear of another to drag us apart.
I think love is something I will never attain.

Al, this heart pouring is brave. To allow one's heart to feel, is one the kindest things we can do for ourselves. Unfortunately, yes, it can cause many afflictions like this piece suggests. But to live in a world without sharing happiness, warmth, compassion, trust, love? That would make for a very dark and sad existence indeed. It's always worth it. Like I said before, hold onto the ones who fill your life with sunshine and let the rest move on. :)

Very well written piece. I hope, as with most of your writes, that this was cathartic for you.

I could rage on these lines! But alas I must pat you on the back for honest portrayal.

I'd like to think those who can manage to feel love so deeply for one and lose it can find it again. The most important thing is to learn how to overcome "A fear for the future and how to re-start."
