Friends Of The Night

Friends Of The Night

I cry in the dark but not in the light.
Whilst the starkness of daylight just heightens my fears.
The mantle of blackness absorbs all my tears
This release of emotion comes in the night
Removing the doubts produced in the light.
I’ve seen my parents in the dimness and gloom
But there’s never a feeling of impending doom.
Theses ghosts from the past live in the shadows
Along with my sister which the darkness allows.
They appear in the night because it is meant
The light of day just makes them translucent.
In the still of the dark you can hear their whispers
Penetrating the murk and so easy for listeners.
The noise and the sounds produced in the day
Just drowns out the stillness and keeps them away.
So for me the night is when I start living,
And the day brings on lethargy and I stop existing.
I rely on the words and the thoughts of the dead,
Their advice is all positive not full of dread
So you can keep your daylight, all clarity and light
Because it hides all my friends, who live in the night.

I tend to think they can be around 24/7. I liked this. It was very interesting. Perhaps a tad morbid but really nothing wrong with that. Smile!

Thank you for an enjoyable read.

You definitely appreciate the solace found within the mid of night and I so get that. The world is so quiet then. It is the perfect opportunity for thought and reflection. Unlike the day when we are more sensitive to the ache of existence, the dark is like a cloak that shields our wounds and allows us the freedom to really be who we are. ::sigh:: I miss innocence so much.

Beautifully done, Al. A perfect blend of poetry and truth.
