Darkness, My Friend
There are people who fear the dark, the uncertainty.
Their senses are dulled yet in reality heightened.
All I know with utmost clarity that I embrace obscurity.
Darkness is a passion to be experienced.
Most equate blackness with fear and suspicion
Yet nothing caresses, encompasses you more.
Every inch of your body is in its possession
And penetrates through you right to the core.
With darkness come silence and no chance of sight
Yet any small sound will shock you and fright you
As you strain your eyes peering into the night,
Until you get used to this feeling that’s new.
One must just release all feelings of sense
And concentrate more on the power of the mind
Which heightens its power, becomes so immense.
Now you can see, you’re no longer blind.
So many times I sit in my room without light
To meditate, think or just try and rest.
The best times are always well into the night
When darkness is pure and power at its best.
Clarity of thought fills my mind
With no sensual distraction my thinking is clear
I now can see clearly and easily find
The answers to questions without any fear.
Darkness is also sensual, having passion
It embraces your body like nothing corporeal.
Your whole body is embraced in a fashion
That forms a protective shell, a beautiful seal.
No-one is watching you, you are all alone
No-one to mock you or put you to shame.
You are truly yourself, to no-one atone
For any mistakes or accept any blame.
So what if it’s different this feeling of dark,
That draws you to it like an insidious drug,
For me it’s not threatening, frightening or stark
But a safety factor like some nocturnal plug.
I do all my thinking, planning and writing
Surrounded by eternal night and solitude.
I never have to revert to fighting,
The darkness doesn’t let anything intrude.

My friend, I know exactly of what you speak. Deep into the night is where the solace (and the peace & quiet) find me. Its protective shelter saves us in a way the stark light of day can only imagine. This was written with an affinity for darkness that some might find unnerving, even gloomy, but I relish the joy in it. It is a comfort that cannot be found in very many places. Excellent post!

A,
What can I possibly say? Except that, as
we've discussed, I too embrace the dark.
This is just so artfully descriptive and
emotive about the necessity and grace
that comes in darkness, the silence that
fills us with the nothingness that can heal
the hurt and hold us within its embrace.
It becomes a second womb, a safety that
can make all the difference...
This is, quite simply, amazing.
Be well,
~d
PS: I'm honored. :) |

Unfortunately I fear the loneliness of the dark, fear of getting lost in it, and what I will find if left alone to myself. But you have presented a much better, unique way of looking at it. There is no reason to fear the dark if you know how to use it. Very thought-provoking. |
