Annus Horribilis

Annus horribilis

It’s been a difficult year when all’s said and done
The loneliness, darkness with no sense of fun.
Depression is sneaky with such cunning stealth
It enters your body and robs it of health.

My mind split in two and both disagreed
What was best for each other and what we did need?
So one hid in the shadows afraid to come out
Whilst the other went crazy just wanting to shout.

The only agreement was to both hide away,
To work in the night and then hide in the day.
Their lives ever shrank to the scale of one room
A world with no friends, just pure sterile gloom.

One was agoraphobic who would not go out
This caused the claustrophobic to scream and to shout.
One shunned all friends as he hated himself
And the other put his buddies away on a shelf.

In time there followed the inevitable breakdown
When doctors were called in to patch up this meltdown.
There followed the treatments, the words and the tears
But eventually both confronted their fears.

The process continues, there is no quick fix,
Just well oiled and well-trusted cathartic tricks
At least the two are together as friends
And if one does indeed push the other one bends.

The one thing they agreed on was turning to writing
Since this seemed to stop them from eternal fighting.
Now they have friends Selene, Lisa and Duff,
But both have agreed that this can’t be enough.

A pact has been drawn up and sign it they will:
To stay free from illness and keep writing still.
People must know that depression is rife
And tolerance and kindness reduces this strife.

“People who suffer from depression deserve a life too”
Alistair Muir

Alistair, your last line is precious and savours strongly of tender appeal. There is a conviciton in your words that engenders the will and strength to survive. There awaits pain in the world. That is inevitable. But there is so much wonder and beauty and joy as well. THAT is what we need to concentrate on. It's the simple pleasures that keep us grounded. And it seems to me that you've found at least one, in writing. Always a pleasure to read. Thank you for sharing with us.

I am very touched by your kind gesture but what pleases me more is that you are writing and letting some of whats bothering you breathe. I hope you feel comfortable enough to continue writing because your words have meaning and you shouldnt doubt. Being on here isnt about competing. Just do what makes you happy and that's all that should matter my friend. Again, this was great to read.

take care
