The Fifth Stage
When as a young man my father took me to the cinema,
I watched and marvelled at the enigma that was Kubrick.
2001 was visually stunning and as musical as opera,
Yet to a youth, inexperienced, was confusing, quixotic.

Was the film a reflection of the long journey through our life?
Perhaps this indeed was what Kubrick wanted to explain to us?
Science Fiction or Science Fact it had hardship and strife.
Surely our existence is just as homogeneous.

This Odyssey has been pondered and postured about by many.
Theories of creation, evolution, techno phobia, they are profligate.
But Kubrick took Arthur C. Clarke and made it his progeny.
So try as you might your theories will never ever elucidate.

Only they know the answer and for us life is the same.
It is a finite enigma which provides much for us to consider.
Only each of us as individuals can act, take blame, and feel shame,
Should something arise and we feel more loser than winner.

The actions we take in our life have cause and effect,
But once put into motion it is our duty to make the best
Of something that perhaps we are unable to correct.
The test of life is to live and not to be laid to rest.
