Keeping it Austin

Contributed by zedwards on Tuesday, 23rd March 2010 @ 09:28:52 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

A city’s wealth is not measured by her skyscrapers
Her bustling subways or concrete jungles
Her city blocks paved in zigzagging grids
Her elitist, politicians, statues, or stars
It’s not found in local newspapers or chronicles
It’s not necessarily seen or heard
Smelled, touched, or sensed by the brave
It’s a feeling felt by those who live there

Culture is the fuel that ignites a city’s fire
Alive at night and awake during the day
It has a life of its own making
Beckoning people closer like the sun to the trees
It’s not big enough to find yourself lost
Or small enough to be too boring
It’s the right size and it fits you well
When you leave a part of it travels along

The city limits shine a starry night
And beneath its gold lies something great
Is it the live music sounding loud?
For all cities have it in their own right
Or is it the green beltways that grow wild?
The creeks, rivers, and springs soaking the Texas heat
What is it that makes such a city breathe?
While others cough and choke on themselves

Perhaps it is in the atmosphere far above
An invisible blanket wrapping her warm
Separating her spirit from the earth
Beating the lifeblood of its people
With endless notes howling in forgotten dreams
Filling the countless buckets of blood time has spilled
Where 6th street has moaned its waning footfalls
Of the many wandering souls both lost and gone

Yet, no matter where you come from
What walk of life your feet carry
What kind of music your ears favor
What type of person you are
Rather a hipster, yuppie, punk, or geek
An outcast of a former misplaced life
You will find something in Austin
…Worth calling home

But don’t change her into something she’s not
The worst part of California
Tied with the tallness of New York
Let her grow like a child but not too fast
Always remembering her greatness
While carrying her forward
Let our hearts tell it true
For keeping it weird is keeping it real

…And keeping it real
Is keeping it Austin

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
