head swirling with thoughts; this among that
where to go? what to do?
I wish the world was flat
then I could see everything laid out all plain
I'd scarcely lose all my wits again
alas, 'tis the nature of college admissions
I suspect I'd have better luck working on nuclear fission
and understanding its intracacies, both inside and out
for college admissions make me want to shout
and cry, and exclaim to all of the sky
"Why didn't you pick me?? Why, why, oh why?!"
as I see my classmates cast their heads to the ground
in utter defeat, not making a sound
their silence is a mass of thoughts unspoken
filled with dreams and hopes that are shattered and broken
I taste my tears as I stare at the wall I pound
as a crumpled letter falls
to the cold, hard ground
the act says it all:
"I didn't get in, I didn't get in!" they expel
as the defeated masses all writhe in their private hells
words like "sorry," "next time,"
and unfeeling hands on shoulders
all come tumbling down
on the conscience like boulders
crawling, bleeding, from under the pile
each lonely student just sits for a while
and contemplates...
CONTinue to think; stir; ponder; regret
EMPathize with others whom they've never met
LAy on assorted beds; couches and just blankly stare
TESting the ceiling's ability not to care
shift
i wish all decisions could be that clear
but some things are muddled
and might elicit a tear
or two
or three
or four
from the swollen eyes of I
who can never, will never
realize why
...I didn't get in...
but
all clouds disappate, eventually
and things aren't entirely bad, you see
for I spot the sun peeking out at me
and as I look up, a new letter falls from the sky
it reads: "Things will be alright. Cheer up, big guy."
and I think for a second
or two
or three
and pull down from deep inside of me
a small wisp of hope for the brand new day
and I tell myself, "I think I'll be okay."
