Head down, averted eyes
Looking for the line of fire,
The division of safe and hell,
Any good hiding place
Quiet, hush, hide away
If only my ears were deaf,
I can’t hear this verbal beating
But I’m paralyzed
For a reason
I’ve been where you are now
And that’s why I can’t watch
I’ve been a shield before too
And that’s why I can’t be seen
No heroes live long
With victories incomplete
There’s no saving you
When you can’t save yourself
So I hide away like a coward
Not a coward, just finally wise
To not fight when I can’t win
Now if only I knew
How to close my ears
As well as I can my eyes
It breaks me still, I feel it snap
The heavy heights, the speed
At which our worlds spin
So far out of our control
And into his destructive hands
One of us has to be Horatio
One of us has to get out alive
You’re in the headlights
Breaking upon the windshield
I guess it has to be me
To endure your hell and mine too
Because someone
Someone has to make it through

I adore the title and the reference at the end. (Did you just read Hamlet or what? lol What a wonderful inspiration it has been on you!) Horatio is definitely a survivor, in so many more ways than the word implies. It offers a perfect comparison for your poem. The imagery in this is unrelenting. There is nothing calm or gentle about it; like an almost madness in the necessity to get out alive. It makes for a very enjoyable read.
Love this. This is just fantastic writing!

Such a wise and well thought out poem about letting wisdom show the way instead of fighting a battle with no victor. Fantastic imagery that is sewn together with wit.
"You’re in the headlights
Breaking upon the windshield"
That is a great line.
well written
take care
