I am a Poet

I am a painter with no brush
I am a builder with no hammer
Without bricks or mortar
Without one single nail
I create
I can paint you a sunset
Or a sweet embrace
I can spin tales of lost love and despair
I can show you the first rains
Or take you on journeys to lands yet undiscovered
Places where only the heart may follow
Some paint for the eyes
I paint for the soul
For whether they paint in the deep blues of the sea
Or the rich greens of the grass
Their work will never leave the canvas
I am a poet
And I will lay myself bare before you
My thoughts
My desires
Everything that i am
For all to see
And if you cut me
I will bleed ink
And its rivers will transform the world
For I am a poet
And my ink, will change everything

I really like the poem and you explain being a poet very well, I however need to say something about the wonderful biased/nonbiased rating system (a bit of sarcasm). Please please please be true to yourself. Even though I think all of us, whether we want to admit it or not love the praise. Some of us like getting the feedback and critique. I have seen others ask for comments and/or critique and then when they don't get what they want, they get angry...sometimes even quite irate. But because you get a certain rating, least in my not so humble opinion, does not signify or indicate how good of a job you are doing. It only indicates an opinion. Also, at times I truly believe it only signifies or indicates how much someone likes you. I think there have been and quite possibly still are those that will give you a low score simply because you ****** them off or said something they didn't like or agree with. Others give all fives no matter what. No offense is intended to them...they simply do.
Also, just the other day, perhaps yesterday or the day before, I noticed one poem with atrocious spelling and absolutely no flow with a score of five while the very next one I read had a nice rhythm, flow thing going on, and perfect spelling with a one. So what warranted that? Opinion. My opinion is the other was at best a two and the other a five, or a four. Opinion. In any case, who ever gave those scores or ratings gave them with no regard at how good a job each poet had done. My opinion is, at least as far as how good a job someone has done, a five is the best possible rating and a poem with atrocious spelling by no means deserves the best possible rating. In addition, how does the five show the poet with atrocious spelling how good a job has been done?
So, anyway, before I step away from the podium I close with this:
Just keep up the good work and again, just be true to yourself. No one knows what's going on in your mind except you. The rating system is definitely not an indicator of how good of a job you are doing unless the person backs up the reason for the rating. It is only simply a way of saying how much someone likes the poem...or perhaps you.
I did like the way you described yourself.
Take care,
Tim

I am going to ditto Tim on everything he said about the star rating system.
Beware at one time we had a one star rater who haunted the halls here, it caused a commotion to say the least lol......
Now as far as this poem, it is beautiful, it flows and I felt it, If I feel it to me it is poetry.
I would give it a ten, but since five is as high as it goes this one gets a five from me,

Great write. Who cares about stars!
"I will bleed ink
And its rivers will transform the world
For I am a poet
And my ink, will change everything"
I love that ending!!!!!! |

*wild applause*
(is that not worth more than a thousand stars?)
Let me first just say, I so agree with Tim. The rating can be, and from what I understand has been, abused. The best measure of a poem, I'd say, is the comments left behind. Anyone can come in here and click a stupid button, but to actually leave words that convey the emotion impressed upon the reader shows how much the piece moved them-- enough to articulate the thought. Even if it's only a so-so feeling. You know exactly what your words have done; how far they've reached, you know?
As for the piece itself ... damn! I've read a lot of poetry on what makes a poet, a poet, but this truly takes the cake. You've woven such a beautiful, and complete work of art. No one could dispute the profound beauty that lies within the lines. It is exceptionally moving. I would love to reference what touched me most, but I'm afraid the entire piece would be cut and pasted.
If I had to sum it up in one word? E x q u i s i t e
