Death . . . the relentless pursuer; with salivating jaws and deadly fangs, running at a constant gate; closing, ever closing on His prey.
Early in my life, His presence went unnoticed; His deadly clutch seemed known only to the feeble and sickly who, after their rendezvous with Him, disappeared quietly, with little enduring impact on my life. Now I can hear Him, feel Him; a faint drumming in my head, as His ethereal form crosses the diminishing terrain of my life.
With eyes aglow and panting stinking breath, He's on my scent. Evasion is futile; there's no cranny within which I can crawl and remain, unmoving, soundless, so as to fool him as to my whereabouts. There is no scientific elixir or religious amulet that will protect me from His stalk.
No, not a question of if; rather a question of when and where we shall meet. Is the battle to be swift or painfully protracted? When it's over, while I shall surely lose, will I be a loser by final reckoning?
These are the questions that come to mind in the black stillness of the night, as I envision the demon; an apparition on the edge of my life, loping toward our point of convergence, determined to take me without hesitation or mercy. All I can do is prepare for the inevitable by being conscious of His presence, pressuring me with ever greater urgency, as my life draws nearer its conclusion.
There are tasks undone; reparations owed, love as yet unshared and truths to disclose.
There are poems unwritten, ideas insufficiently explored, commitments unmet and damaged relationships in need of repair, a young mind to mold, personal mysteries to solve and faces to kiss once again.
All of this yet to be done and more, with Him stalking me, forcing me to sometimes lose focus on what's important as I concern myself with His eventual arrival. Mind you, I'm not afraid of the final encounter with Him; I shall take my turn bravely as others have and will.
The greatest fear with which I grapple is that of unfinished business becoming my legacy, when other traces of my existence have vanished.

Hi,
The older we get the more we seem to glance over
our shoulders - even if we're not aware of it.
I share in much of this, particularly your last verse.
Well said.
