My Wings Never Grew

My wings just never grew
Blackened from ashen cage
It would take me years to learn
What changes the world is outrage.
The pain in the mockingbird’s cry,
Dust crusted upon rusty heart,
If only I knew what golden oars
Could do to split the wind apart.
Drip drop oily black tears
I would’ve never known
Had I not bent the bars of fire
With fire I had on loan.
It was within me, stirring
As I leapt out and into a fall
I could’ve never dreamed
Of how it felt to soar above it all.
