10 years

10 Years. Where did they go?
Are they stored away in our closets of junk?
Put away like a spare tire sleeping in the trunk
Or washed away like rain in the city’s aqueduct
Doesn’t matter; they were with us and now they’re gone
Disappeared like a magic trick with a tip of a wand
We can look forward or we can look ahead
Close another chapter on the books we’ve read

There was a time when kings and queens took the stage
And we were just actors acting out our teenage
We were the MTV generation when MTV still played music
Alive when the world was electric but sounded acoustic
For I remember when Grunge was young
A scene in music that had just begun
Or how 2000 seemed so far away
A dawn of a new era scripted Y2K

Memories come to me in flashes of yearbooks
Faces painted with the past frozen in looks
How we played in the fields and rolled in the grass
When it came to 2000 we were that smoke free class
But we are an existence in forward motion
Perpetual like waves surfing the ocean
Another reminder with each passing birthday
That you can’t buy back your youth on E-bay

Born in the eighties was how it began
We took the nineties for a ride and ran
And as the decade took its dramatic close
We stood at the brink of two and three zeroes
It smiled back at us in the rearview mirror
For we had hold of the wheel ready to steer
A decade’s joyride blazing a trail in haste
Like the generations before us we have now replaced

Our senior trip under the California sun
Has suddenly set like 10 years on the run
And beneath the ashes of everything we’ve done
Burns a beginning of what has yet begun
For we have graduated into adulthood
Like saplings into trees in a forest of wood
No longer children lost in the could, would, and should
We are standing on the place where 10 years once stood

Now some of us are married, have jobs, raise children
Try to make sense of this world we live in
No matter what we do or where we are
We share 10 years that have carried us so far
10 years gone to be followed by ten more
And soon 20 years will come knocking on our door
To add to the time that disappears
Until then it’s just 10 years.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
