Smoke rising from fire

The grocery store welcomed
While we raced across the parking lot
I first noticed you
In a brown cardboard box
You were the only gray one
Next to an orange brother and sister
Smoke rising from fire
You beckoned me closer
I went to pet you
And you scratched my hand
The blood tickled my finger
While you stood proud
I knew right then
You were meant to be mine
I begged my Mom please
With a promise to take care of you
Added to the milk and bread
You were brought home then
Where I went you weren’t far behind
But as I grew taller
Our connection became farther
Alone you waited for me to come home
Four legged insanity
Crying to an empty room
While I was young
You became old
The smoke is gone now
The fire has been tamed
And in the ashes
Part of you remains
Like a true love
You belong in my heart
