This story is real
It is not lore
The setting is France
1944
We rode our trucks
Through a small French town
Nobody here
I couldn't help but frown
One cold night
While clearing a house
I heard a noise in the back
And it wasn't a mouse
I went to the back shed
With much haste
As the next house must be cleared
No time to waste
In the shed he was
In his own little nest
The patches on his coat
Read "Waffen SS"
He got off his chair
With a look of fright
As this American GI
Was ready to fight
We both reached down
And drew our knives
Mentally preparing
To fight for my life
Now I can remember
As he began to shiver.
As my knife
Drove into his liver
He began crying
As heard they do
And as I clutched him
I started crying too
I have just killed a man
Whose eyes looked cold
I'm a killer
At nineteen years old
He slumped to the floor
And while he lay
I hit my knees
And began to pray
Forgive my lord
Answer my prayer
These sins I've commited
Are too much to bear
And to this very day
When I see a knife
I think back that man
Because I took his life
Many a time I've thought
Maybe he liked to fish?
I think of his son's first steps
And the other things he'd miss
I should have never went to that shed
Or even pulled my knife
Knowing that memory
Would haunt my life
Now I hope to see him
In that Heavanly place
And I'll know its him when I see him
Because I've never forgotten his face
From the expiriences of Staff Seregeant Mike Francis RIP, told on his deathbed.
