Would you tell me the stories about the wars
You've been through, Fernando
Cos I remember when you were young
You loved to share them with your friend.
Would you, please, tell us about 1941
And the roar of tanks above your head,
So why are you silent now,
Like you've got nothing to tell?

Now you're old and grey, my lovely friend
And you've seen a lotta things we never did,
I know your old wounds ain't healed completely,
And I don't wanna salt them, my dear Fernando
But the roar of tanks and cannonade calmed long ago
But you keep rememberin' quite as it was yesterday,
You told us and I felt the bitterness in your words
Cos there is something that the time cannot erase, Fernando.

Do you remember how we were sitting at the flame?
It was a lovely starry summer night, my friend,
And I remember the youthful enthusiasm in your eyes,
Also the way you played the songs you'd heard that time.
There was such grief and tears inside them
I felt it just like I was there with you, my friend,
You sang, but your songs sounded like stories
About the death and self-sacrifice, the courage and glory.

Now you're old and grey, my lovely friend
And you've seen a lotta things we never did,
I know your old wounds ain't healed completely,
And I don't wanna salt them, my dear Fernando
But the roar of tanks and cannonade calmed a long ago
But you keep rememberin' quite as it was yesterday,
You told us and I felt the bitterness in your words
Cos there is something that the time cannot erase, Fernando.

I know all your stories and songs by my heart
Also I know about your losses and your rewards
But, I can't even imagine what you had to go through
My lovely friend, Fernando.
And I guess, no one can tell about this as you can
Cos you have seen the death, you stared it at the face,
And there were the moments as you begged to take you away,
But anyway, you're here, and you know what it's like,
So don't be silent, my old friend Fernando
Tell us, please...

Having family members who have seen war I believe what you have written takes place more often than not in the mind of a soldier. What they have seen haunts them forever and discussing it is not an option. Well written.
