If I were a pencil I’d be easy to break
A yellow Twinkie of wood and lead
An eraser top that was pinkish red
To use and abuse I am yours to take
If I were a pencil I’d be jealous of a pen
Who dips into an abundance of ink
To be refilled like water from a sink
For I’m like a bottle of wine easily gone when open
If I were a pencil I’d be mightier than the sword
Sharp with wisdom and wit
And into your hand I would fit
Creating words to destroy every army’s hoard
If I were a pencil I’d write letters to you
Soaked in love and ripe with sorrow
Tenderly waiting for you in every tomorrow
Describing you with words written in the truest true
If I were a pencil I would learn to draw
Fountains and feathers floating
Beneath the trees of summer’s coating
And full as the colors in season’s fall
If I were a pencil I would erase
All that was ugly and false
And leave all the beauty like moss
To canvas our landscape with flowers and taste
If I were a pencil I’d be gone to soon
Sharpened and whittled away to nothing but trash
Writing to my death with every scribble and scratch
Turned to ashes in the morning of a setting moon
If I were a pencil I would not breathe
I would be alive in words
My only voice to be heard
Long remembered after I take my leave
