You who love me you who care
How I wish I could show you
Just how hard it is for me
When I can't love you
So kind so sweet
So honest and gentle
Every woman dreams of affection like yours
And it breaks my heart that I am unable
To return the feelings you long for
I've been there, I am there
I feel your pain, and my own
Loving the person who's heart you'll never have
I wish I could lessen the pain, I do
Easier, wouldn't it be, if I could just be cruel?
Yes it's always less painful when rejection is brutal
But it's not in my nature, to be blunt and rude
So I realize it hurts more than you let on
I smell the tears hiding just behind your eyes
Every time I smile kindly and say "I'm sorry"
Yes, those tears I've cried myself, so hurt
But yet we smile and assure the other that it's alright
We're fine
But we aren't, are we?
It hurts more than anger
"Leave me alone, I'll never love you!"
If only he or I could say that, right?
If only it were that simple
But he and I are alike, that man that holds my heart
We cannot lessen the pain
Of those who love us but the love we cannot return
So instead I'll cry for you, my friends
My faithful friends whose love runs deep
Knowing the pain full well that I inflict on you
Now bearing the pain of friendly rejection, and of rejecting others
I fear I'll slip into a deep chasm of suffering
"Never settle for someone you don't love"
The words still ring clear in my memory
Advice I've clung to my entire life
But who knew not settling would hurt so much?
I will not let he whom I love settle for someone he does not love
Even if the one he'll settle with is me
Just as I will not settle for they who love me
For I cannot love them in return
Love is a cruel, hateful game
Broken hearts litter the ground
Why can't we all just be happy?
Why can't I have the one I love
And him have the one he loves
And they have the ones they love
Love triangles painfully stab us all in the back
The suffering toys of an innocent child
Tearing the wings off of insects
Aware or unaware of the pain he brings to all his toys
Our hearts, ourselves, we are all fragile dolls
