Final Breath

Final Breath

Tonight as I walked out in the new night’s snow
Off in the distance I heard the train whistle as it blew
The frigid winter air pierces right through the skin
With each breath it cuts at the soul within

Tonight I will finally make it to the tracks
Once reached, there will be no looking back
This has been a journey long over due
One that will bring adventures that are new

You are poised with the wind at your sail
But I am an anchor, can’t you tell?
As with every adventure there comes a final page
Nearer comes the time when everything is on stage

As the train pulls into the station the signal lights flash
A hand full of the new snow onto my face I splash
I need to make certain I am wide awake
So many times I imagined this only to find they were fake

As each journey contains its ups and downs
Remember there will be smiles and frowns
May yours contain more smiles each new day
Enough to hold most of the frowns at bay

As I make my way to the train I am hit with that familiar pain
It beats through my like the driving rain
Knowing that with my death your anchor will be released
You chance at a happy life will be a thousand times increased

As the train leaves the station dawn begins to break
Along with the darkness, my final breath it does take

How devastatingly sorrowful. Self sacrifice for the benefit of another. Though I wonder, would this person think of it as noble? Or would they be riddled with guilt, knowing they were the reason? Love the way this is written. The melancholy that drifts in like the snow is so completely beautiful. Even amidst the sadness.
