A New Purgatory

There were the usual suspects
at sister Cheryl’s 21st.
Uncle Eric, whose diabetes never got
in the way of his stout;
brother Jeff with his jaw wired from a
stunt gone wrong
—friends and family onto old school mates
and hangers on, packed into the backyard,
the smoke from burning snags drifting
into the Milky Way and, trying to hold centre
stage as mum fussed and fed the hordes,
our dad; all bum-crack and beer belly,
struggling thick-fingered with the
wire crown of an Asti Spumante bottle;
a Cro-Magnon Alexander with his Gordian puzzle.
And as the cork popped and arced towards the
fluoros listing above the open buffet,
I wondered what new purgatory
my father would be inhabiting,
come the morning.

Another great write Spike!
I sense a slight dual layer to this, but would prefer to take the lighter one!
Thanks for an enjoyable read...
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours down under!
