An Elegy for the Banyan Tree

Grief

I see the Banyan tree, spread out majestically,
From the terrace of my home, farther away.
Standing out from the cluster of high rise buildings,
It is a land mark to those visitors seeking directions.
And dawn is the time to watch the hundred years old tree.
Causing sudden commotion, Crows to all direction fly,
May be hundreds or more, none can count precisely.
Their voice not mellifluous to your ears, though;
Like a novice playing the untuned base strings of a violin.
Some times disturbed by loud noise, scared they are;
Fly away like an unruly mob, chased by the police.
Like any other day I went to the terrace one day,
Shocked I was, unable to see the lofty Banyan tree.
Was the disappearance an illusion created by a magician’s wand?
All of a sudden I remembered the deafening thunder last night,
I hurried to the place, anxiety writ large on my face,
There I saw the tree lying prostrated, the trunk badly burnt,
A tragic end to this Nature’s icon, I painfully thought.
Oh Banyan tree, there is none to mourn your death,
There is no Thomas Gray to write an Elegy for you,
Nor there will be any memorial service to praise thy past glory,
No epitaph will be erected to commemorate your selfless service.
You generated tons and tons of oxygen for our well being,
Braving the hot Sun you provided shade to men and animals alike,
And to those petty shops that came up in your sprawling canopy.
Generously you blew cool breeze, relieving us from sweltering heat,
You were a sweet and safe home for those countless birds,
Rain or shine, took them in your caressing fold, like a mother.
Even death hasn’t stopped your humane service to humanity,
As fire wood you’d readily burn to cook food for the poor,
And serve till you last as embers, a dying fire, your real death.
I am no talented poet to immortalise you in beautiful rhymes,
But I shed tears secretly and condole your death silently.
If you were to have a soul (wishfully in preference to those ‘soulless men’),
May it rest in peace.

A lovely tribute, poised and graceful
as the Banyan tree itself, swaying blissfully in the breeze.
Great write
