America,
In my heart, you are a valley of flowers, a tumble of down sparking my laughter; in my dreams, you are an endless banner of hills broken at the crest by sudden blue seas. You are beautiful America, and my arms reach readily to the embrace of your rivers, but I am also lonely in you, and disheartened by your waning, for you are waning America, you are growing old.
In you America, I see a million dreams broken and scattered across your streets, I see the shadows that your stature hides, the myriad unseeing eyes that you have left behind. As a child I loved you America, I sang your songs with triumphant, stalwart glory and covered my heart to you with foolish, childhood pride, but I can no longer love you, I can no longer jubilate at the splendor of your skies.
America, you depart, your mountains and seas, your dreams and memories, your declarations and promises cast to earth and forgotten in the upraised voices of cell phones and televisions, lost to tarmac and gold— America you are beautiful, but you are growing old.
