what is a friend?

Contributed by elle on Wednesday, 11th November 2009 @ 11:40:40 AM in AEST
Topic: FriendshipPoetry

what is a friend?

my thoughts. . .

it is one with

whom you dare to be

yourself.

your soul, naked before him

he seems to ask of you
to put on nothing,

only to be what you are.

he does not want you

to be better or worse.

when you are together

you feel as a prisoner

who has been declared innocent

. . . set free. . .

you don't have to be on your guard.

you can say what you think or feel
so long as it is genuinely you.

he understands

those contradictions

in your nature

that lead others to misjudge you.

with him, you breath freely.

you can avow your little vanities

& envies

& vicious sparks

your meanness & absurdities

& in opening them up to him
they are lost

dissolved. . . into the white ocean

of his loyalty

you do not have to be careful.

neglect him. . . tolerate him. . .

best of all, to be still with him

it matters not

he likes you -

he is like fire

purges to the bone

he understands. . .
understanding

you can weep with him

sin with him

laugh with him

pray with him

through it all

& underneath he sees. . .

knows. . . loves you

a friend. . .

what is a friend?

one
just one, I repeat

with whom you dare to be

yourself

I've been thinking about this just recently and you are absolutely spot on. Well written and a great conclusion.
