While waiting at the airport
To pick up Grandpa Bill
My daughter asked the questions
I can't forget and never will

Mommy who's that man
And why's he dressed that way?
He's going to fight for our country
He's flying far away

But why is his mommy crying
He's big enough to go?
She's sad she wont see him for a long time
Just how long they don't really know

But now he's crying too
Can't he come back in a couple days
Where is he going
That's so far away?

He's going to fight a war
In a place called Iraq
It's a pretty scary place
and sometimes they don't come back

Well mommy what's the war
and why is it so scary?
I tell myself shes only five
I shouldn't let her worry

Mom you didn't answer me
And why don't they come back home?
Honey it's real hard to explain
Some things even I don't know

There's some bad people there
Who aren't doing things quite right
And our soldiers are going over there
To try and end the fight

Mom my teacher told us
about the soldiers the other day,
She said lots of people are dying
Will he make it go away?

Honey he's gonna try
While he's in that scary place
He's fighting there for all of us
Trying to make sure we all stay safe

Rare silence from the back seat
Maybe I've said to much
A rear view glance of tear filled eyes
from a heart that's truly touched

Doesn't he have babies
he needs to come back home to see
and if he doesn't come back
Then who's gonna be their daddy

My son just sat there quiet
through the talk that we'd just had
All the sudden I hear him whisper
A seven year old voice should never sound so sad

Mom I was just thinking
Maybe we should pray
And ask God to keep him safe
So he can come home someday

We bow our heads And close our eyes
As I try to keep mine dry
The last thing that they need right now
Is to see their mommy cry

He sits up straight , breathes in deep
And takes his sisters hand
Knowing this ones got to count
He's going to save that man

With a quiver in his voice
He finally starts to pray
Dear God I hope your listening
There's something I've got to say

Please bless that man that's over there
The one who's hugging his mom
Keep him safe watch over him
Make sure he's not gone to long

And all the other soldiers
That go over there to fight
Do the same for all of them
I'll ask you every night

Then end the war as fast as you can
So they can all come home
If you do I promise God
I'll never do another thing wrong

I'll listen to my mom
and never tease my sister again
I'll remind you first thing tomorrow
In the name of Jesus Christ amen

They looked up and smiled
and turned their eyes back towards that man
who turned their way and looked back at them
As if he'd heard the conversation we just had

As that soldier turned to walk away
He gave them a quick wink and smiled back
Look mom he felt our prayer
He knows he's going there in Gods hands
