The scene has ended but we’re still on stage
The lights are still on, no one notices but me
You actors and audience look at me expectantly
I’ve got nothing more to say; I’m ready for a change
But this eerie silence is scary, unduly strange.
Scenery frayed, dusty, gray from overuse
It’s been a long play and it hasn’t changed one bit
I’ve memorized every single inch of it.
Maybe it’s time I say the lines I pick and choose,
This time the winner won’t win, the loser won’t lose.
I imagine the act’s end, wearing purple robes
Crying, saying goodbye, so happy to be done
Seemingly effortless survival, really a war won.
But it’s many more scenes of all this nothing
Before I hear that fat lady belatedly sing.
It feels like years more of actor’s clothing,
Of lines I didn’t write, didn’t want to say
Before I have the chance to get my way.
I’ll be off this drafty stage, living at last
With all this pretend a mistake long past.
