The Waiting Game

Contributed by HaleysHeresat on Tuesday, 29th September 2009 @ 09:01:30 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

Three hours,
thirteen cigarettes,
and countless awkward glances
Which all seem to question my motive for sittin in the parkin lot
Leanin against the cracked yellow curb.
What? Don’t act like you’ve never waited for somethin before—
A man, in particular.

He should’ve been here by now;
Perhaps I’ve missed him.
But just to be absolutely sure,
I’ll give it another thirty minutes or so,
Helplessly resistin each second that passes
Without sight of him
(I have things to do today).

It’s no use, he isn’t comin.
But somehow, gettin up to walk away would be like
Severin my right leg.

He doesn’t know I’m waitin for him—
Maybe that’s why he isn’t here yet.
I’ll bet he’s never
Stood a girl up in his whole life.
(He can’t really stand me up
If he doesn’t know I’m here)

But I couldn’t have told him I would be waitin for ‘im
On account of I think he’s in love with his girl
I don’t know her, but I know I don’t like her

I only wanted to see him,
Maybe wave, or smile and say hi
Nothin out of the ordin’ry.
But I can’t wave or smile at someone
Who is almost positively not comin.

My nails are raw with teeth marks
My knuckles don’t need to be cracked
For about twenty years after today
I’ll probably have emphysema
Tomorrow, the way I’m goin on.
My back will undoubtedly be
Sore from the leanin and waitin

Is it just me or is the sun settin?
I didn’t realize I had been out here for so long
Or maybe I did, and just didn’t want to believe it

Only fools wait this long for
Someone who should have
Been
here
hours
ago,
(If he was gonna show up at all)
But it’s a nice night, so I guess
Fifteen more minutes wouldn’t kill me
