Shadowy muted shapes cast below by moonlight,
Now banished by a youthful dawn that spreads before us pristine daylight,
The morn at one with natural chills;
Nature’s ingenuity lays itself on outlying hills.
To the distance winds the valley, draped in hanging mist.
Prepared am I for a lengthy saunter like some part time naturalist,
Verdant plant life fresh, emergent
All manner of my joys convergent
Along the banks of the ancient Severn dark, deep and brooding.
Captivated by all that surrounds me, I ponder while I’m strolling.
A proliferation of life abounds in the environs of the watercourse,
A reminder of the beauty that has nature at its source.
Nervous mothers nurture nests alive with fledglings,
An act of care and protection that ignites paternal feelings.
Ripples shimmer and sparkle so bright
Dazzling liquid diamonds created by the sunlight.
Mossy banks are peppered with the fauna’s mottled hues
And down through swaying branches more sunbeams are diffused.
Something slithers underfoot as I trek along contented
A well placed projection aids my steadiness and I don’t become upended
I’m mistrustful of a path from mud composed
Wary of the rocks with jagged points exposed
In different seasons these well trodden paths are parched and cracked
Up on the embankment cleared driftwood lies in stacks
Less frequented paths weave between the mighty trees
Constant now the hum of bees
And below a newt climbs rocks to find a slimy refuge
Safe in the dampness of cold solitude
Ahead; a majestic Heron has no hurry
To snatch a meal of fish unwary.
I pass by other anglers many, who while away hours
Their presence seems so natural as they doze amongst the flowers
Aware of the danger from above, nestled in the reeds
Fish alert and sentient conceal themselves in Streamer Weed
Yet added peril in the singular Merganser
These crafty fish know all the answers
So Sabrina’s waters keep their purpose, unremitting
From the Welsh hills down to Bristol, steadily meandering.
Now is time the diluted, fragile sunlight starts to fade,
Nocturnal creatures come forward and venture into shade,
All around exudes peacefulness and tranquillity.
I feel I’ll take another stroll in the garden of serenity.
