The Grimoire: V. Misfortune’s Heart Envenomed

Contributed by gravehorn on Thursday, 13th August 2009 @ 11:07:35 AM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

I stood atop a mountain overlooking misty seas
Where clouds of sanguine treasure mask a valley of disease
A thousand steps of anguish hard upon the chiseled stone
Descended through the panic and the fearing of unknown.

The rush of feathered phantoms plagued my sanity and mind
As wings and shrieks of flying fiends encircled and entwined;
A Harpy flock that flew amidst the clouds and far beneath
To where we too took stride and gait, my fear for them bequeathed.

We broke the hazy threshold and took store for what we saw;
A dizzying display of sin and grand in torments raw.
The sight beguiled reason and perceptions I once held
As tables made for feasting reached beyond where darkness dwelled.

As quiet contemplation was the guide that led my pace
The Florentine discerned the awe and question in my face.
“T is here within the second realm of penalty and pain
That gluttons fat by sinful means are sheltered by disdain.

Forever forced in death to bear the pains of eating flame
Atop the burning bowls of coal, with only they to blame.
And should they choose to disobey the torment of their crime
The Harpy beasts swoop down beneath to force the flames inside.”

The grade of which the stairwell fell had lessened as we walked
Until our feet had duly found a place among the level ground
Amidst the moaning feasting sound that hampered as we stalked
Surrounded by the writhing and the moaning as we walked.

A dusty trail of heavy stone made way between the dead
Between the marbled tables where the blood ran somber red.
The stark and shameful bodies with their throats so full of flame
Distilled by anguish pandering as did the dead proclaim.

By way of stern decorum of the poet as he strode
And by his present knowledge of this maledicting road
‘T were clear that in his lengthy past he tread this path abroad
For here he’d walked so many times, disheveled, hewn and flawed.

‘T was midst our current journey through the feasting of the cursed
That Dante shown to me the souls of bad and of the worst.
By means of clever circumstance he listed several dead
Who found their anguish here about with flames inside their head.

I will not then relay to you the multitude we seen
But will indeed give notice to a few in the extreme
As well as those I’d known in life before I’d taken flight
From out the country of my youth with ever present sight.

There was among the punished, of the gluttons and the damned
A many numbered suitors who had sought the royal hand
In way of fair Penelope when fortune plagued the skies
Until the clever man of twists came bearing his disguise.

For years they ate the livestock and they drank her royal wine
And now upon the feasting grounds, on fire coals they dine.
Fifty men beguiled by temptations they befell
Left now to bare their torment for eternity in hell.

Beyond the rotting suitors deep amidst the feasting crowd
Behind a ring of fire and the hazy brazen shroud
Alone upon a table with the irons he deserved
Vitellius the flatterer sat broken and unnerved.

His fingers hot with ashes and his tongue of blackened hue
His lively hunger rousing all the anguish that ensued.
For though he wished for nothing more than quit his appetite
A pain far more inducing would take refuge from his plight.

A many more the large and wasteful filled the vast ravine
But forward strides took us inside the next place we convened.
The dirty road of screams and heat seduced my mortal fears
But in our journey I had seen my path becoming clear.

I love your writing style. You are a master at using effective language. I found myself in this world of flames along with you. You have so many details that it gives me a full picture of the torture going on in this piece. I love its darkness. It intrigues me. I read it twice and got so much out of it and I still need to read more to get its full magnitude. Great job!
