Ring around the rosie
Pocketful of posies
Ashes Ashes
We all fall down
The sound of children singing the song
But they don't know their meaning is so far wrong
We teach our kids this little chant
my mind squirms as I think the meaning
They just don't know
How could they though
We let them sing a song of death and what do we say
Don't worry about it just let them play
I had a little girl ask me the meaning of the song
I thought her mature enough to know her meaning was wrong
I told her it was a song of the plague
I could see in her eyes a mind that had aged
She now knew something she shouldn't
not now her mind just could
Think why we teach them such a dark song
She began to cry I told her I was wrong
I should have let you just play
And sing your song
Then I here the children sing again
Ring around the rosies
Pocketful of posies
Ashes, Ashes
We All Fall Down

You are right. I believe Ring around the Rosie is about the black plague and if my memory proves right - it was about the outbreak and death in Venice? Or maybe Europe in general. Anyway....
Many nursery rhymes were made up in a sense to scare children. But I think maybe because they are so easy to rhyme or easy to remember - as children we get them stuck in our heads...and skip rope or hopscotch or whatever to them.
Just rambling (I do this)...
But I also found your thoughts to be compelling and it gave me a point to think on.
For that I thank you.
